have deceased while active members of the C.F.A.




CFA #107 — Coan, B. Allen of Litchfield Co., CT, Æ 68, died 25 Jan 1997 in Torrington, CT. He was born 11 Aug 1929 in East Dorset, VT, the son of Homer Ancil & Eunice (Steere) Coan. He is survived by his wife, Violet (Krompegal) Coan whom he married in 1954. His great- great grandmother was Delight Crandall (1803-1859) who married Thomas J. Coon.

He joined the CFA in April 1995.


CFA #96 — Elgin, Margaret Reed (Crawford) of Tucson, AZ, Æ 82, died 8 Mar 1997 in Tucson, AZ. She was born 4 June 1914 in Kahoka, MO, a daughter of the late Leon Baker & Jennie Lynn (Reed) Crawford. She married Woodrow L. Elgin 10 Jul 1938, and he survived her but but a few months, dying in Tucson 20 June 1997. She had joined the CFA in April 1995. She was a great-great-granddaughter of John Reed & Charlotte Crandall.



CFA #200 — Crandall, Lynn Denman of Solana Beach, CA, Æ 62, died 8 Mar 1997 in San Diego Co., CA. He was born 13 Feb 1935 in Wichita, KS, a son of the late John Denman & Gladys (Carnahan) Crandall. He married Karen Boundy but was divorced at the time of his death. He had joined the CFA in March 1996 as a life member.



CFA #43 — Perry, Charles Stuart of Burlington, VT, died there 16 Apr 1997 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Burlington 28 Jan 1922, the son of Harry Wilbur Perry (1888-1951) and Anna Louise Cook (1890-1951). He was an early member of the CFA, joining the old organization in 1991 and the new CFA as soon as it was organized.



CFA #44 — Pierce, Joan Matilda (Crandall) died at her home in Cedar City, UT 22 Nov 1997 from complications of cancer. She was born 12 October 1930, in Hardwick, VT to Charles Palmer & Martha (Halling) Crandall. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1952. She entered the U.S. Air Force where she met her husband, William J. Pierce. They were married 10 December 1953 in Newport News, VA. After raising her family, Joan went to work for Health and Human Services in 1976 and worked as a claims representative until her retirement a few years ago. In her spare time she enjoyed needlework, puzzles and reading mystery novels. Joan is survived by her son Mark Pierce, two daughters Pam Gentile and Mary Pierce, two granddaughters Hailey and Kristin Gentile, two sisters Pam Crandall and Sally Cromer, a step-sister Aral Rogers and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband.



CFA #11 — Crandall, Robert Edwin of Westerly, RI Æ 79, died 27 Nov 1997 at the Westerly Hospital after a long illness. He was born in the Benjamin Hoxsie homestead on Klondike Rd. in Charlestown, RI on 15 Jul 1918, the youngest child of Elisha Perry and Maud Lillian (Taylor) Crandall. He was predeceased by his sister, Marion E. Crandall, in 1990 and his brother, Fred P. Crandall, in 1991. He was life member #11 of the Crandall Family Association and had been on the Executive Board since 1994. He was a veteran of WW II. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia B. (Arnold) Crandall, and three children: Lorraine E. Corr of East Lyme, CT, Wayne R. Crandall of Charlestown, RI, and Mickey A. Crandall of North Kingstown, RI — all life members of the C.F.A. His sister, Edna Lillian Mashl of Charlestown, RI also survives. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, four nephews, and three nieces.



CFA #139 — Crandall, Charles Franklin of Westerly, RI, Æ 83, died 12 Dec 1997 at the Clipper Home in Westerly, where he had been a patient for a short time. He was born in Westerly 20 Jan 1914, a son of the late Frank H. and Alice Addie (Arnold) Crandall. He was predeceased by his wife, Doris (Shippee) Crandall. He was member #139 of the Crandall Family Association. He is survived by three children: Robert A. Crandall of Westerly, Janice C. Bursell of Oxford, MA, and Cheryl C. Dumelow of Spanishfort, AL. He is also survived by four sisters, Ruth C. Greenhalgh of West Palm Beach, FL, Dorothy C. Bliss of Lynchburg, VA, Marguerite C. Purnell of Seaford, DE, and Eleanor C. Thayer of Shannock, RI. A brother, Frank H. Crandall of North Port, FL also survives, in addition to five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.


CFA #47Sanger, Charles Glen, Æ 78, died 25 Jun 1998 in Tucson, AZ. He was born 2 Feb 1920 in Hood River, OR, a son of Charles Augustus and Elizabeth (Parrott) Sanger. He was a very early member of the CFA, linking himself back to an Ethan Crandall (1775 - 1850), born in Hoosick, NY and buried in Bayham Twp, Elgin Co., Ontario. This Ethan is not the Ethan listed on p 86 of the 1949 Crandall genealogy. Cousin Glen had hoped to find his Elder John lineage when he joined the CFA and left many queries with us. He died not knowing his proper lineage.

His great-grandmother was Esther Crandall (1822-1914), daughter of the above Ethan.

He married Mattie L. Grubbs in 1947. She predeceased him in 1996. He is survived by one sister, Betty Jean Bennett; two daughters, Glennis Firestone and Patti Marie Jones; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by four sisters: Beulah in 1968, Marion in 1994, Gladys in 1983, and Bonnie in 1988. A son, Charles Duane, died in infancy in 1957.



CFA #131 — Torrey, William G, Æ 83, died 2 Apr 1999 in Portland, ME. He was born 26 Nov 1916 in Syracuse, NY, the son of Bates & Alice (Quinby) Torrey. His g-g-g-grandfather was Philip4 Crandall of Tiverton, RI.

He is survived by his wife Mabel Catherine (Dunn) Torrey whom he married in 1957.



CFA #4 — Dzekevich, Helen Ermine (Raithel), Æ 79, died 3 Aug 2000 in Providence, RI. She was born 3 Apr 1921 in Charlestown, RI, the daughter of the late Fred & Minnie (Bliven) Raithel. She was the widow of Joseph A. Dzekevich (1920-1990) whom she married in 1944. She had been a registered nurse in Providence until her retirement.

Helen was one of the very early members of the CFA, joining as a life member at its inception in 1994. She is survived by two sons, Joseph A., CFA #291, of Harvard, MA and Donald A. of Providence. One granddaughter, Dawn Marie Dzekevich, CFA #141, of Boston, MA, also survives.

Helen was the granddaughter of Franklin E. & Ermine Eunice9 (Crandall) Bliven.


CFA #269 — Britland, Lois (Brayman), Æ 73, died 11 Nov 2000 in Westerly, RI. She was born in Westerly 23 Feb 1927, a daughter of Fred and Marion (Arnold) Brayman. She is survived by five children: Kelsie James, Bethlehem, PA; Larry Spencer, Caribou, ME; Dianne Spencer of Narragansett, RI; Cathy Park of Charlestown. RI; and Paul Spencer of Westerly. Also surviving are three sisters: Hazel Hall of Wakefield, RI; Virginia Higgins of Westerly; Geneva Farrar of Florida. She was predeceased by three brothers: Daniel, Kenneth, and F. Arthur Brayman.

She was the g-g-g-g-granddaughter of Benjamin6 Crandall & Margaret Franklin.



CFA #78 — Crandall, Virginia B. (Arnold), Æ 81, died at her home in Westerly, RI 26 Feb 2001 after a lingering illness. She was born in Hopkinton, RI 16 Apr 1919, the youngest child of the late Daniel E. and Hannah E. (Brown) Arnold. She was the widow of Robert E. Crandall, CFA #11 and an original CFA Board Member, who died 27 Nov 1997. They were married 9 Sep 1939 in the First Hopkinton Seventh Day Baptist Church in Ashaway, RI. She was interred next to her husband in Oak Grove Cemetery in Ashaway.

She is survived by three children: Lorraine E. Corr, CFA #18 and our CFA President, of Westerly; Wayne R., CFA #28, of Charlestown, RI; and Mickey A., CFA #25, of North Kingstown, RI. Eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

She is survived by a sister, Dorothy West of Pawcatuck, CT, a brother, Harold E. Arnold of North Stonington, CT, and several nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by several siblings: John A. Arnold in 1981, Eldred A. Arnold in 1983, Albert E. Arnold in 1978, Marion G. Brayman in 1986, Hazel Oates Stockbridge in 1989, and Elsie Leighton in 1995.

Ginny was the g-g-g-granddaughter of Benjamin6 Crandall & Margaret Franklin. Her husband, Robert, was also descended from this couple — he was their g-g-grandson. This made Bob & Ginny third cousins, once removed on their Crandall line.


CFA #1 — Crandall, Earl Perry Crandall, 64, of Catskill, N.Y., died suddenly at his residence on Saturday, March 2, 2002.

Earl P. Crandall was born in Norwich Connecticut on December 28, 1937, to the late Frederic and Arvilla (Kenfield) Crandall. He was raised in Charlestown Rhode Island, and graduated from Westerly High School in 1955. He earned his bachelor's degree in science at the University of Rhode Island in 1959, and completed his master's degree in 1961.

He moved to Catskill New York in 1962, where he taught chemistry and earth science at the high school and served as science department chair person until his retirement in June of 1990. During his career he served as the high school's drama coach and was class advisor.

An avid genealogist, he was the proud founder of the Crandall Family Association and member of the Geer, Palmer and Miner Family Associations.He was the Website editor of the CFA's website since 1995. He was the past vice president of the Empire State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and member of the Decendants of the Mayflower as well as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Claverack Branch. Having taught for more than 30 years, he was also a member of the New York State Teacher's Union.

Earl P Crandall was an accomplished organist and amateur photographer. He was a collector of family memorabilia and Zippo lighters among many other things. He enjoyed traveling both abroad and within the United States

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, David and Cassandra(Stenholm)Crandall; his sister Norma(Crandall)Gaudlap; his nephew, David E Crandall Jr.; his niece, Jeanette(Gaudlap)Smith; his grandniece, Jacqueline Smith, all of Rhode Island and Bryan W. Schloss of Catskill New York, his beloved friend and companion for more that 25 years.

CFA #68 — TATE, Ruth Kenyon, Æ 90, died 18 Sep 2002 in White Plains NY. She was born 21 May 1912 in Hopkinton,RI, the Daughter of Walter D. and Evangeline(Canfield)KENYON. She was married on 3 Aug 1948 to William Preston TATE. He died in 1970. Ruth Graduated from Alfred University in 1933 and from Cornell University in 1943. She served with the American Red Cross during WWII in New Guinea as Red Cross Recreation Worker in the South Pacific. Following the war she taught English and drama in Bath and White Plains, NY. She was active in the White Plains Presbyterian Church, and director of the Senior Drama Group for many years. She is survived by a brother, Reginald Kenyon of Hopkinton RI and many nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by six brothers and a sister.



CFA #287 - CRANDALL, Nancy, passed away on 14 Feb 2003. She is survived by two daughters: Michelle Lynn PERDUE of Pensacola FL, and Melinda IRELAND of West Palm Beach FL, One son: Kenneth Crandall of Boca Raton FL, and five Grandchildren. She died of Pulmonary Fibrosis after battling the disease for four years. She was a fighter till the end - just like a CRANDALL.
