The Very Mysterious Lineage of George5 CRANDALL

of Dutchess Co., New York

138

There has been and still is a great deal of controversy about the George Crandall which John Cortland Crandall numbered as #138. The lines shown here show some of the results of current and ongoing research. There are many people who feel that George Crandall and his wife, Tacy Tanner, had other children not mentioned in the 1949 genealogy, including Hampton Lillibridge Crandall, who was known to have siblings — Freeman Crandall and Charlotte Crandall.

However, there is also evidence that perhaps those three might be the children of John Crandall and Amy Lillibridge. This John Crandall is a son of the John4 Crandall numbered #63 in the 1949 genealogy. Max E. Crandall of Sicamous, British Columbia also suspects that Jonathan and Clark, and perhaps even Lewis might be sons of John and Amy (Lillibridge) Crandall!

As information about this line is "unravelled", it will be posted here.

GEORGE5 CRANDALL, son of Samuel4 CRANDALL and Mary -?-, was born 29 May 1739 (some sources give 1741) in South Kingstown, Washington Co., RI and died shortly after Jul 1833 when he made a deposition regarding his Revolutionary War Pension from Smithville, Chenango Co., NY. There is also some circumstantial evidence to show that George may actually be the son of John3 (Samuel2, Elder John1) Crandall (JCC #30) and his first wife, Melissa -?-.

George married 20 Sep 1761 in South Kingstown, Tacy TANNER, daughter of John TANNER and Susannah WEST, born 22 Jul 1742 in Charlestown, Washington Co., RI. She is not mentioned in her husband's Revolutionary War Pension papers.

There is some discrepancy over the number of children born to this couple. It appears that there may have been eleven children, probably all born in Dutchess Co., NY, surname CRANDALL:

399½ i. Reuben6 Crandall, b 22 Mar 1763, d 16 Sep 1817; m Rachel -?-.
401 ii. Esther Crandall, b 1765; m Laban Crandall (#397).
138-3 iii. Samuel Crandall, b Abt 1767, d Ae 100.
138-4 iv. Tacy Crandall, b 1769, d Ae 116.
402 v. Lewis Crandall, b 13 Apr 1772; m Clara Shute.
138-6 vi. Freeman Crandall, b 4 Jul 1774; m Rhoda Reed.
138-7 vii. William Crandall, b Abt 1775.
138-8 viii. Hampton Lillibridge Crandall, b 1778, d 1 Jan 1863, probably in Wapello Co., IA; m 1805 Freelove Butler. (See p 673 of John Cortland Crandall's 1949 genealogy.)
138-9 ix. Caleb Crandall, b Abt 1779, d 1850; m Elizabeth Brazee.
138-10 x. Charlotte Crandall, b 1783, d 1856; m John Reed.
400 xi. Tanner Crandall, born 1 Apr 1784, died 22 Sept. 1854 Cass Co., MI; m (1) Hannah Brakeman, (2) Abt 1817 Susan Hall; 17 children.

  • NOTE: There is some speculation that Tanner Crandall may have been an illegitimate son of Esther Crandall, George's eldest daughter, or even the child of Esther and Laban Crandall.
